Are ICSI or IVF Pregnancies High Risk

Are ICSI or IVF Pregnancies High Risk?

Every pregnancy has a certain amount of risks no matter it happened by assisted fertility techniques like egg donation or it was occurred naturally. The emergence of a human by cells division is a very complex process that is exposed to failure especially during first weeks. So many pregnancies end during early stages, even in case of young healthy women the pregnancy rate is around 20 or 30 percent on every cycle.

The women’s reproductive ability decreases from the age of 35. After the age of 40, the probability of getting pregnant naturally is about 8 percent and at the same time the chance of miscarriages gets higher. Thus, every pregnancy which happens after the age of 35 is considered as the high-risk pregnancies. This does not mean that there are specific dangers for the mother and the child, but the attending doctors have to monitor the pregnancy progression more cautiously than usual.

Risk Factors for Pregnancy

The first risk is about the age of the mother. As the age of the mother goes higher, the risks of pregnancy increases, too. In case of young women, there are other complications which can be considered as the risk factors. They can include:

  • Metabolic disorders
  • Chronic diseases like diabetes or rheumatism
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Unhealthy lifestyle such as poor nutrition, lack of exercise, etc.
  • Taking medication for other health problems
  • Using alcohol, cigarettes and other drugs
  • High blood pressure

Now there are 25 to 30 percent of pregnant women who are considered high risk all around the world. However, by the comprehensive medical assistance during the pregnancy, there can be a less chance of complications to happen.

Pregnancy Risks

All over the world, about 40 million couples take advantage of modern reproductive treatments. Getting pregnant by the use of artificial insemination has the same risks just like a natural pregnancy. We will review some of the risks below.

  • Ectopic pregnancy: there is always a chance for ectopic pregnancy. This is because embryos can move even if they have been implanted into the uterus. By fertility treatment due to comprehensive examination of pregnancy progress, ectopic pregnancy can be detected and treated during early stages.
  • Abortion: about 10 to 15 percent of all pregnancies end in miscarriages. By IVF treatment, the risk of miscarriage can be a little higher. However, one of the most important reasons is the average age of the mothers that are usually higher during the process.

Risks with ICSI and IVF Pregnancies

In ICSI or IVF pregnancies, the hormone treatment is utilized in order to stimulate follicle growth. Besides, sometimes 2 or 3 embryos are transferred into the uterus that can lead to multiple pregnancies. These attempts can have some side effects:

Ovarian hyper-stimulation syndrome (OHSS):

the hormonal stimulation can make ovaries increase their activities. This over activation can result in gathering liquid in abdomen and severe pain. But the risk of OHSS is a maximum 2%.

Multiple pregnancies:

in the process using IVF, by the decision of the doctor two or three embryos may be implanted into the uterus. As the result, this can lead to multiple pregnancies. Twins are born around 15-25 percent of the cases and triplets are delivered in 3 percent of the pregnancies. This issue can raise the rate of premature births, intrauterine growth retardations and abortion.

An American study investigating on 40 thousand IVF children and 3 million naturally conceived kids showed that the risk of low birth weight after assisted reproduction is twice the rate of natural pregnancies. Another study has shown that pregnancies that have taken more than a year to happen have higher risk for lower birth weights, fetal retardation and caesarean section than pregnancies that happened in a short time.

Transmitting genetic disorder:

Recent studies show that there can be increased chance for transmitting genetic disorder in ICSI procedure because in 3-5 percent of infertile men, a genetic factor is involved and the child might also have a fertility problem in the future. For this reason, before initializing the ICSI process, having a genetic consultation and even undergoing PGD (Preimplantation genetic diagnosis) are recommended.

Delivery conflicts:

In pregnancies by the help of fertility treatments, the rate of premature births or intrauterine deaths are a bit higher than natural pregnancies. Also IVF pregnancies are in higher need of induced labor or caesarean section. However, it is assumed that these complications are not caused by the method of fertilization, but rather due to the increased chance of having multiples and the risk factors of the mother.

Also, women who are involved in fertility treatment often have problems such as cycle irregularities, uterine anomalies and obesity. So the slightly higher rate of congenital defects after IVF and ICSI procedures are more referred to risk potential of the parents rather than the technique itself.

Who can use IVF?

IVF technology can be useful for couples who use a surrogate mother to have a baby. Also by the use of egg donation process, it helps women who have infertile eggs have a baby.  IVF can even help those couples who have no problem with fertility but they have some worries about the genetic disorders which are running in their family. In order to prevent passing them on to their baby, they can take advantage of IVF+PGD procedure.

Best countries for IVF pregnancies

There are many countries which are performing IVF technology, including the USA, Canada, the UK, etc.  Besides the quality of the IVF service, one of the most important factors that should be considered while choosing your perfect destination is about costs. That is because IVF process can be expensive and may even be a need for multiple attempts. This fact can cause many couples no to persue their treatment because it is out of their budget.
